Luka Mezgec third after Bert De Backer goes close on Stage 12

May 16th, 2013

Luka Mezgec, now Team Argos-Shimano’s main sprinter at this year’s Giro d’Italia, came third at his first shot at victory today on Stage 12.

The young Slovenian sprinter watched and waited as his team mate Bert de Backer was caught in the final kilometre before unleashing his final effort.

The riders rolled out from Longarone at lunch under heavy rain setting the scene for a testing day in the saddle, and as soon as the flag was dropped, the attacks started to fly.

Bert was on a mission to get himself in the move today and showed his strength in getting in a five man break which was given the green flag by the bunch to plough on ahead and forge an advantage.

He had a very close call at one point on a slippery bend as all four of his breakaway companions hit the deck, however somehow he managed to keep it rubber side up and safe.

The break came back together a few kilometres later and it was race on again as they worked well together heading towards the finishing circuits.

With 10km to go the gap was lingering at around a minute and the break looked doomed however, the final 3km was neutralised for the overall meaning that as the race his the last kilometres, the chase was limited behind.

Yet as Bert and the other escapees headed under the red kite with 1km to go it was all over as they were finally swallowed up with just over 600m to go. The sprint unfolded from then on where Luka positioned himself well and took a solid third place behind stage winner Mark Cavendish (Omega-Pharma Quickstep).

“This was an amazing performance by the whole team today and I enjoyed every minute of it,” said a very satisfied sports manager Addy Engels after the race. “When we woke up and it was raining I knew there would be a chance that the break could stay away and we decided to give it a go. Bert de Backer was the chosen one. Throughout the whole race he was very strong and for a long time it seemed that they might make it. Unfortunately they got caught, but Luka Mezgec’s impressive sprint of made up for this at the finish.

“Bert was very disappointed after the race, he felt good and was the strongest of the group. Tonight he will probably be happy about his race as he didn’t make any mistakes and did a good job up front. But if you are that close to a stage win you are always very disappointed after the finish.

“Luka’s sprint was just outstanding. I knew he would be good and able to get a top ten result, but to sprint like this I didn’t expect. It his is first race at this level, we knew he was a sprint talent, but thought it would take a bit longer to achieve these kind of results.”

“This is very cool,” said an exuberant Luka Mezgec. “I expected that the sprint would be more chaotic, but it was quite alright to be honest. Patrick Gretsch brought me to the front and I stayed there. I started the sprint quite early as I was not in the best position but as soon as I had the right gear I was able to keep on going. My goal was a top 10 place, so I wasn’t expecting this.

“Last season I didn’t train a lot on my sprint and as soon as I joined this team we started to work on it. With the staff, we made a plan and I am reaping the rewards of that now. My sprint has improved a lot the laste couple of months. It’s cool to see how that has developed when you have a dedicated training plan.”

Tomorrow is the longest stage of the Giro and should be another one for the sprinters, but hopefully the weather will be kinder and Luka will no doubt be full of confidence after today.
